What is Muhurta?

A Muhurta is a unit of time in Vedic tradition equal to approximately 48 minutes (2 ghatikas or 1/30th of a day). However, in popular usage, "Muhurat" refers to an auspicious time window for starting important activities.

Abhijit Muhurta is the 8th muhurta of the day, centered around local noon (approximately 11:45 AM to 12:33 PM). It is considered universally auspicious for starting any new activity, except on Wednesdays when some classical authorities consider it less effective (Brihat Samhita). The name means "victorious" — any task begun during Abhijit is said to succeed.

Brahma Muhurta is the period approximately 1 hour 36 minutes before sunrise. It is considered the most sattvic (pure) time of day, ideal for meditation, yoga, study of sacred texts, and spiritual practices. Many traditions recommend waking during Brahma Muhurta for optimal mental clarity.

Understanding Planetary Hora

The Hora system divides the day (sunrise to sunset) and night (sunset to next sunrise) into 12 equal segments each, totaling 24 planetary hours. Unlike clock hours which are always 60 minutes, Hora durations vary by season — day horas are longer in summer and shorter in winter.

The sequence follows the Chaldean order: Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars. The first hora of each day is assigned to the weekday lord — Sun for Sunday, Moon for Monday, Mars for Tuesday, etc. This is actually the origin of our weekday names.

Practical use: If you need to schedule a meeting, choose a Mercury or Jupiter hora for business success. For medical appointments, avoid Mars hora. For creative work, Venus hora is ideal. Saturn hora is good for real estate and long-term investments.
