Antardasha: What Is It and How to Calculate Your Sub-Period

Antardasha (also known as Bhukti) is the sub-period within your Mahadasha. While your Mahadasha sets the broad theme for years at a time, it is the Antardasha that determines the specific experiences unfolding month by month.

What Does Antardasha Mean?

Antardasha comes from Sanskrit: antar (inner or within) and dasha (period). It literally means "inner period" — the subdivision running within a Mahadasha. It is also widely called Bhukti, especially in South Indian Vedic astrology traditions.

Every Mahadasha contains 9 Antardashas, one for each planet in the Vimshottari system. The sequence always runs in the same Vimshottari order, starting from the Mahadasha lord itself.

How Antardasha Duration Is Calculated

The duration of each Antardasha is proportional to the Antardasha planet's own Mahadasha length:

Formula: Antardasha duration = (Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet's years) ÷ 120

Example — within a Saturn Mahadasha (19 years):

Antardasha Planet Planet's Mahadasha Years Duration in Saturn MD
Saturn193 years 0 months 3 days
Mercury172 years 8 months 9 days
Ketu71 year 1 month 9 days
Venus203 years 2 months
Sun611 months 12 days
Moon101 year 7 months
Mars71 year 1 month 9 days
Rahu182 years 10 months 6 days
Jupiter162 years 6 months 12 days

The sequence always begins with the Mahadasha lord's own Antardasha, then continues in Vimshottari order.

How to Interpret Mahadasha and Antardasha Together

The Mahadasha and Antardasha lords interact to create the texture of a specific period. Key interpretation principles:

  • Friendly lords amplify positive results: When the Mahadasha and Antardasha planets are natural friends (e.g., Jupiter–Sun, Venus–Mercury), the period tends to flow more smoothly.
  • Enemy combinations create friction: Saturn–Sun or Mars–Mercury combinations in MD/AD can create internal conflict — Saturn's restriction vs. Sun's desire for recognition, for example.
  • The Antardasha lord's natal placement matters: Look at which houses the Antardasha lord rules and occupies in your specific birth chart. This tells you which life areas (career, relationships, health, finances) are emphasized.
  • Transits confirm timing: Even within a favorable Antardasha, specific events cluster when the Antardasha lord is simultaneously activated by important transits (especially Jupiter and Saturn).

Pratyantar Dasha: The Third Level

Below the Antardasha sits the Pratyantar Dasha (also called Sookshma Dasha) — a further subdivision into 9 mini-periods. Experienced Vedic astrologers use this third level to time events down to the week or month when the first two levels look promising.

Most Dasha calculators show the Mahadasha and Antardasha levels. Pratyantar Dasha is typically used for precise event timing rather than general life trend analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Antardasha the same as Bhukti?

Yes. Bhukti and Antardasha are different names for the same thing — the sub-period within a Mahadasha. Bhukti is more commonly used in South Indian Vedic astrology traditions, while Antardasha is more common in North Indian usage.

Can an Antardasha be stronger than the Mahadasha?

The Mahadasha lord sets the fundamental context, but a very powerful Antardasha lord — especially one that rules important houses in your chart — can dominate a period. For example, in a weak Saturn Mahadasha, a strong Jupiter Antardasha can still bring significant growth and opportunity.

How many Antardashas are there in total?

Since each of the 9 Mahadashas contains 9 Antardashas, there are 81 unique Mahadasha–Antardasha combinations in the full 120-year Vimshottari cycle.
